The “budo” mentality is a harsh battle with itself. We have to realize that we are daily in battle with the complex environment that surrounds us. To win competition, or getting a dan is only skimming the surface of karate.
The value of budo is much greater. It is important to cultivate the indomitable spirit through long-term training. Emphasis must be placed on one’s internal qualities. The true motive/meaning for those who study budo is in the spirit of training. The body and the spirit work in harmony with each other. Without training the spirit there is no physical or technical training.
One must respect the normal social order and must endeavor to build character in harmony with life in society.
Finally I would like to quote the precepts of Goju-Ryu karate according to Grandmaster Chojun Miyagi:
It should be known that secrets principles of Goju-Ryu exist in the kata.
Goju-Ryu karate-do is a manifestation within one’s own self of the harmonious accord of the universe.
The way of Goju-Ryu Karate-do is to see the way of virtue.
